A $3 Million Bond in 2003

The Michael Jackson bond is a useful illustration of how the California bail statute scales — the same 10% premium applies whether the bond is $5,000 or $3,000,000.

In November 2003, Michael Jackson surrendered to Santa Barbara County authorities on charges later filed in Santa Barbara Superior Court. Bail was set at $3,000,000 — one of the highest bonds in California history for a non-capital case. Under California Insurance Code § 1800.4, the bail bond premium on a $3 million bond would be $300,000 (the statutory 10%), with substantial collateral pledged by the indemnitor to back the bond.

The case proceeded through 2004 and 2005, and Mr. Jackson was acquitted of all counts in June 2005. As is standard practice on a successful disposition, the underlying bond was exonerated and any pledged collateral was returned to the indemnitor in full. The premium itself — paid up front to the licensed surety — stayed with the bondsman as compensation for taking on the financial risk during the pendency of the case. That is California law and it applies at every bond size.

Why does this matter for someone reading this page today? Because high-profile bonds work exactly like ordinary bonds, on the same statute, with the same percentage. We have written bonds across the full range — from $500 misdemeanor bonds to multi-million-dollar bonds with property collateral — since 1956. The process scales. The discretion scales. The pricing follows the same statute.

What the Statute Says About Large Bonds

High-profile bonds are not regulated differently — they follow the same rules as every other California bail bond.

Cal. Ins. Code § 1800.4

The 10% Premium Applies at Every Scale

California sets the bail bond premium between 8% and 10% of the total bond — from a $500 misdemeanor bond to a multi-million-dollar high-profile bond. The percentage is the same; the absolute dollars scale with the bond amount.

Property Collateral Practice

Large Bonds Require Collateral

Bonds above roughly $100,000 typically require property collateral in addition to the premium. The collateral protects the surety in the event of a forfeiture and is returned in full when the case is resolved.

Confidentiality Standard

High-Profile Cases Stay Quiet

Bail bond paperwork is confidential by industry standard. We have written notable bonds for decades and have never been the source of a public disclosure about a client.
